themanclion: (unhappy realization)

There's no reason for Gene not to dive right back into work, now that he's back from wherever he was... Or maybe wherever he wasn't. He's not exactly sure just what happened to him back there, only that it pisses him off.

With all he's got to catch up on. there is absolutely no reason he should be heading for Sam Tyler's room, except for the fact that they haven't spoken since before Christmas, and he's just lost two months of his life that he's not getting back.

Tyler's got Cartwright, he tells himself. No reason for you to even be here, he tells himself. You're acting like a great stinking fairy, he tells himself, and if you're going to play the bum-bandit, the least you could do is not be a sodding girl about it.

Of course, it's not like that leads to him getting back to work. Oh, no. That just leads to him pacing outside Sam's room, muttering to himself and occasionally glowering at the door.

After a good ten minutes of muttering and pacing, he finally gathers the courage -- and he's not going to make a single Cowardly Lion joke, not even in his own head -- to knock on Sam's door.

Sam's been waiting for him to knock - it's not as if he couldn't hear him pacing outside. When the knock does come, Ivanhoe jumps a little, probably preparing to bolt for cover underneath the bed. Sam, on the other hand, gets to his feet, walks calmly to the door, and pulls it open, eyebrows raised already.

"Ten minutes," he says simply. "I've been timing you."

"If something had happened, I would have said so on the journals," Sam comments dryly, one hand on the door frame, searching Gene's face as much as he can when he won't look at him. "I'm fine."

After a moment, he shifts a little to allow Gene to step through the door if he'd like. "Where were you, then? Gondor? Cair Paravel? I've heard children's books are standard."

Sam's eyebrows rise another fraction of a centimetre, a little surprised at the hostility. Then, it's Gene, so maybe he shouldn't have grown out of the habit of expecting that... "Annie would have told you," he amends shortly, pointedly calm.

He doesn't move out of the doorway, which leaves him standing... very close to Gene. After a moment, he sighs and shakes his head a little. "This city went to hell a long time ago, and we've been..." He stops a moment, and then his lips quirk into a not at all amused smile. "I suppose this would be a bad time to tell you Time Agent... 462O1 is back. Was back. We haven't seen him since around the time you disappeared."

Not exactly happy news, or appropriate for a reunion of any sort, but... He felt he ought to mention it anyway. Not exactly something you want to take a person by surprise.

Sam shrugs, sighing, and fixes his eyes on the top of the door frame, above his head. "Not much. We found him in the hall, the one that dropped out of some horror movie... His shadow tried to kill us, and we had to kill him a few times, but the most he did was lie to me and make a run for it."

And Sam would rather not think about that night if he can help it, thank you very much. He can feel a headache building, right between his eyes, and reaches up to rub the bridge of his nose.

"If he's even still in the city, he's being very quiet about it." And Sam is fine with that. It's a pleasant alternative to kidnapping and torturing people, and better than he would have hoped for. Where Jack is now, what he's doing - that doesn't matter.

Sam smiles vaguely at that, dropping his hand. Well, this couldn't get much more awkward, could it? ...Actually, come to think of it, he's fairly certain it could, but he'd rather not dare the universe to make it so.

"Annie's... Annie's fine." After a moment, he sighs a little. This whole conversation is ridiculous, and he's fairly sure Gene knows it too. "Are you coming in or not?"

Sam steps back from the doorway, just watching Gene for a moment as he moves into the room. That comment, though, that gets a vague, quietly amused smirk, his eyes on the floor rather than Gene's face. Well, that's something, at least. It's as close to "I missed you" as Gene's ever going to get.

"You might've said that to start with," he murmurs under his breath, and he's moving already toward Gene, grabbing his shirt as he reaches him and landing a hard kiss on his mouth. He missed you too, Gene.
